Read paper ↗Dr James Morandini is a Sydney-based clinical psychologist, researcher and research supervisor whose work focuses on sexuality, gender identity and gender dysphoria.
He founded King Street Psychology Clinic in Newtown to bring evidence-based clinical care, specialist supervision and research into one service. His approach combines methodological rigour with curiosity, cultural awareness and respect for the complexity of individual lives.
James holds a PhD in Psychology and a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology. He lectures and supervises postgraduate research, collaborates internationally, and serves on the editorial board of Archives of Sexual Behavior.
King Street Psychology brings together a multidisciplinary team supporting adults, young people and families. The clinic also maintains active research links with Australian universities and contributes to professional education and supervision.

His university and professional work has included honorary research affiliations at Western Sydney University and the University of Technology Sydney, higher-degree supervision at the University of Sydney, and clinical supervision for psychologists and other health professionals in Australia and internationally.

James works one day each week at The Gender Centre in Sydney as Clinical Lead of its Counselling and Psychology Service. He established a Clinical Psychology Master’s placement programme that trains future clinical psychologists in assessment, formulation and evidence-based support for transgender, non-binary and gender-questioning people.
The programme is one of relatively few Australian clinical psychology placements specialising in the mental health of gender-diverse people. It has involved trainees from:
James and placement interns have also delivered a tailored eight-week Tuning in to Teens group to help parents understand and support transgender, non-binary and gender-questioning teenagers.
Dr James Morandini is a Sydney-based clinical psychologist, researcher and research supervisor whose work focuses on sexuality, gender identity and gender dysphoria. He continues to publish and collaborate internationally, with recent work examining sexual-orientation beliefs, bisexuality, gender dysphoria and diverse developmental pathways. James completed a PhD in Psychology and a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology, lectures and supervises postgraduate research, and serves on the editorial board of Archives of Sexual Behavior.
James lectures on gender/sexuality diversity in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical programs (including UTS, UWS, ACU, ACAP, USYD), is an Honorary Research Associate at The University of Western Sydney and University of Technology Sydney, as well as a Ph.D. and higher degree supervisor at The University of Sydney School of Psychology. He provides clinical supervision on these issues to clinical psychologists and other health professionals in Australia and abroad, including in his capacity as National Convenor of the Psychology of Diverse Bodies, Genders, Sexualities Interest Group of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
He has supervised about a dozen postgraduate psychology students in sexuality and gender related research, including several Ph.D students. He has also been successful in gaining domestic and international funding for his research on sexuality and gender including from the American Institute of Bisexuality and the Conru Foundation.
Clinical Psychology
Dr Morandini is passionate about providing psychological support for gender diverse and sexual minority individuals that is both culturally aware and evidence based. He believes that alongside ongoing advocacy and sexual and gender diverse individuals deserve access to high quality scientific research on factors relevant to their lives and wellbeing.
With this in mind, James founded King Street Psychology Clinic (www.kingstreetpsychologyclinic.com.au), a large multi disciplinary psychology clinic in Newtown, Sydney, to provide culturally aware and evidence-based/scientifically informed psychological services for those who experience gender dysphoria, sexual orientation-related mental health struggles, and sexual disorders. His team includes 17 clinical psychologists/registrars, psychiatry, and speech pathology. King Street Psychology is a leading gender and sexuality clinic both nationally and internationally. King Street Psychology Clinic has research links with The University of Sydney and Western Sydney University and is generating important clinical research to support the sexual and gender diverse community.
